"River of Deceit" is a song by the supergroup Mad Season, which consisted of members of Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Screaming Trees. The song was released on the band's only studio album, "Above," in 1995. It was written by the late Layne Staley and features his haunting vocals as well as guitarist Mike McCready's bluesy riffs. The lyrics are thought to be about Staley's struggle with addiction, specifically heroin, and his feelings of isolation and desperation. The song received critical acclaim and has become a fan favorite, often cited as one of the best grunge songs of all time.
